Tour description
We begin our walk with a brief visit to Chion-in Temple, entering through it’s incredible 50m wide Sanmon gate – one of the largest in Japan. If we are lucky we may be able to hear the monks chanting their nembutsu.
We progress to an often overlooked and rarely crowded Tendai sect temple famous for its lovely Soami-designed pond garden and 1000-year-old camphor trees.
Passing through Kyoto’s largest torii shrine gate, we enter the gallery and museum district and head to one of the city’s newer shrines to explore its expansive gardens.
For those interested in the martial arts, a slight detour can be made to visit the Budo center where we may be able to see kendo and/or kyuudo (archery) practioners at work.
After a brief walk we arrive at a cute local shrine famous for its (ornamental) rabbits, before heading on to a two more hidden gems which are usually only visited by locals.
