Tour description
The tour begins with a visit to the famous Kiyomizu (clear water) temple. Perched on the eastern hills of Kyoto, Kiyomizu-dera stands as a testament to Japan’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual devotion. Renowned for its breathtaking wooden terrace that extends over the hillside, this iconic temple offers not only panoramic views of Kyoto but also an immersive journey into the soul of Japanese Buddhism.
After exploring the temple complex we head through Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka slopes and on to the Yasaka Pagoda. These are some of the most iconic sights in the city.
As we navigate the narrow alleys lined with historic machiya houses, you’ll discover a side of Gion that transcends the popular image—a place where geisha culture, history, and the spirit of old Japan converge.
Our path then takes us to some less-visited shrines and temples before we make our way to Kenninji. As Kyoto’s oldest Zen temple (founded in 1202) Kennin-ji radiates the simplicity and elegance synonymous with Zen philosophy. The temple exhibits perhaps the most impressive ceiling masterpiece in the city —the “Twin Dragons”, painted to commemorate 800 years since its founding.
Next we pass through the historic Geisha area of Hanamikoji, where the city’s premiere artists have been practising their craft for many years. The tour ends with a brief stop at Yasaka shrine – home of the famous Gion festival.
The tour offers the possibility of extension with either Okazaki and Northern Higashiyama or Ginkakuji & the Path of Philosophy.
